Delight as LYIT awarded high rank in the Institute of Technology of the Year Awards 2021
LYIT named as Runner-up in Sunday Times Good University Guide 2021
The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2021 has named Letterkenny Institute of Technology (LYIT) as runner-up in the Institute of Technology of the Year Guide.
Waterford Institute of Technology has been named the Institute of the Year, and Dublin City University takes the award for University of the Year for 2021, with NUI Galway as runner-up.
The Sunday Times Good University Guide is one of the most comprehensive, independent guides to Irish undergraduate courses produced with each third-level institution in Ireland assessed under a number of criteria including new developments, facilities and links with industry and research. It is often consulted by students and parents around the country in selecting third level institutions.
LYIT President Paul Hannigan is delighted with the recognition, he says: “I am delighted with this year’s outcome. It reflects the ongoing hard work and commitment of the staff and students of the Institute. At LYIT, we pride ourselves on the education and practical learning that we provide for our students. Student experience is of utmost importance to us and we are continually striving to enhance facilities and student support services on both of our campuses”.
The Sunday Times Guide states: “The Co Donegal-based institution is one of the smaller institutes, but like most is in the advanced stages of planning to become a technological university, in partnership with Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology and IT Sligo. Judges were impressed not just with its collaboration on this front, but also the significant cross-border further and higher education initiatives with which it is involved”.
“Research is a key area of growth at LYIT with staff and students involved in various research projects. A new student research suite will open on 2 November to support the enhancement of research within the Institute. LYIT is set to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2021. It is an exciting time at LYIT, as we join with our partners, Galway-Mayo IT and IT Sligo to become a Technological University for the West and North-West of Ireland,” enthuses Mr Hannigan.
The Sunday Times Good University Guide is now in its 19th year of publication. It provides the definitive rankings for Irish third-level institutions, together with profiles of each institution and a view from students of what it is like to study there. It also contains the first full listing of 2021 honours degree courses and the first-round entry points needed to access these courses from the recently-completed 2020 admissions cycle.
“LYIT is ambitious for the future and looks forward to many more achievements with the help and support of staff, students and stakeholders,” concludes Mr Hannigan.
