Minister announced funding for new gym and outdoor equipment for LYIT

Minister for Education and Skills, Joe McHugh, TD, has announced funding of €98,000 for new gym and outdoor equipment for LYIT.

The Minister said: “This is a huge boost for LYIT, providing new gym and outdoor equipment for the teams, clubs, students and everyone using their facilities. In the long term it will help people involved in sport and encourage more people to keep fit and train”.

Paul Hannigan, LYIT President, welcomed the announcement: “This is a great boost for the area; the equipment and gym is available for use by students, staff and the wider community. The announcement is timely as we will launch our support campaign for the 20x20 on Monday next. This is a national initiative to increase female participation by 20% by 2020. LYIT has a very busy sports programme that runs throughout the academic year including GAA, Hurling, Soccer, Badminton and Basketball”.

Funding was also awarded to the Royal and Prior School and Raphoe Hockey Club. Minister McHugh believes that “hockey is riding the crest of a wave with our women’s team going from strength to strength and bringing players from across the island to compete in the green shirt and set their sights firmly on Olympic glory in Tokyo 2020”.
