€1.8 million investment for School of Tourism
Minister McHugh announces capital investment of €1.8 million for LYIT’s Killybegs campus
LYIT welcomes the recent announcement of capital investment funding for the School of Tourism in Killybegs. The Minister for Education and Skills, Joe McHugh, TD, announced funding of €1.8 million towards significant building upgrades at the Killybegs campus.
The funding is being provided under Project Ireland 2040 which commits to Exchequer investments of €2.2 billion in higher education infrastructure over the coming decade. The funding under Project Ireland will be provided through the Higher Education Authority (HEA).
Paul Hannigan, President of LYIT, said: “I was delighted with the announcement of this funding. Project Ireland 2040 is a great initiative that supports businesses and communities across all of Ireland in realising their potential. This funding will allow LYIT to further its growth and provide modernised environments to enhance the learning experience for our students”.
The School of Tourism celebrates its 50th anniversary this year and this funding boost will enable upgrades to the existing structures of the campus, including a new library and education facilities at the main building as well as administration offices.
In a recent press release from the Department of Education and Skills, Minister McHugh said: “In providing this funding, the Government is acknowledging the important role the School of Tourism has played, and continues to play. Improving the higher education offerings at a regional level is a key plank of Project 2040. LYIT has been proactive in supporting a diversity of education provision including part-time, Springboard+, lifelong learning and apprenticeships. I am pleased that this investment will support LYIT further to develop and grow these offerings”.
LYIT staff are excited about the investment and will commence plans to complete the upgrades and refurbishments in the near future.
